Facts about the Sun

About five million tons of material is consumed every second by nuclear fusion in the sun.

The sun has consumed about half of the material it had originally 4.7 million years ago.

The speed of light near the center of the sun is about 0.03 inches per second due to the high
gravitational environment.  It takes about 200,000 years for a photon of light to travel from the center of
the sun to the surface.  It takes another 8 plus minutes to reach the earth from the surface of the sun.
