Driver Attention Monitor
The Driver Attention Monitor keeps track of where the human's head is facing and if it is looking to
the side it will warn if things appear dangerous from the view of the robot. A warning brake is
applied to get the attention of the driver.
In addition a beeping sound is generated as well as a flashing light. Next the vehicle prepares itself for
defensive maneuvering. Brake assist is primed and the air suspension is adjusted to prevent dipping
from the applied braking.
If a collision appears unavoidable to the car's robot, the brakes are applied and seatbelts tightened to
minimize damage.
To determine if a collision is unavoidable, the system uses sensors that monitor speed, measure
distance to the object, steering-wheel angle, deceleration and yaw rate. The moment a collision is
determined to be inevitable, the seatbelts are retracted to help prepare the occupants for impact and
Brake Assist activates the brake actuator to help the vehicle stop faster. If no collision occurs, the
seatbelts and brakes return to their normal states. Available on the Lexus LS 600 L and the Prius
Generation III.
