The Memory Code
An article in the July 2007 issue of Scientific American page 52 is called The Memory Code.
Researchers show that the CA1 part of the hippocampus in the rat codes fear inducing events in a
hierarchical fashion. For example, an earthquake might stimulate General Startle, Motion, and Shake
whereas an elevator drop would stimulate General Startle, Motion and Drop Cliques of neurons.
He suggests that neurons are organized in a pyramid fashion where the bottom of the pyramid
represents the more general concept and the upper portion represents the more specific concept or
event.
