Replacing Humans for Ecological Reasons part 2
Humans require recreation. Robots don't know what recreation is. Humans camp in forests, start
forest fires, consume forest products, use paper, use lumber for their furniture. Humans feel a
need to gawk at the Grand Canyon, take donkey rides down its paths. It appears that since
humans evolved to live in forests and to compete in a social environment, they feel a need to
watch soap operas, movies, read books about humans interacting with other humans, and on and
on for ever. They sky dive for thrills, they surf for thrills, they white water raft for thrills. Why not
get rid of these useless genes that motivate humans to engage in unproductive activities. There
are plenty of thrills to be had doing useful projects like gaining control of our galaxy, for example.
Basically humans have a need to participate in activities which suit them due to their now long
lost past. They evolved to live in caves and pick berries and hunt game. Now we have to supply the
women with shopping centers to satisfy their craving for gathering while the men watch baseball
and football to mimic their hunting rituals and satisfy their instincts for hunting. Why don't we at
lest update these instincts to something that pertains to current issues, like making sure no more
asteroids come plunking themselves down on our planet.
Robots don't have all of that evolutionary psychological baggage.
Take, for example, a Turing Android that wants to organize a group of other Androids to populate
Mars. Compare him to a person who wants to sit watching NASCAR races on TV while drinking
beer. To me, there is no comparison in terms of what I would prefer. Am I just prejudiced toward
my own kind? Perhaps.
