Next Species Please
It doesn’t take much study of evolution and history to discover that more than 99.9% of all species that ever
existed are extinct. An even higher percentage of every being to ever live on the Earth is now dead. Up until
recently the death rate of humans was 100%. Going forward the same statistics may hold but since there are
about 6 billion examples of humans now living on the earth that have not yet died, we can only theorize that
they all will eventually die.
Review: Inductive Logic
We can infer the obvious rules of life on Earth from the history of life on the planet:
• Most species evolve from other species and then become extinct.
• Some species evolve to other species and thereby continue to support other branches on the tree of
life.
• Most if not all individuals die.
In order to view the true purpose of life, let us look at the evolution of the primates. At one point in time
Homo habilis seems to have been the most advanced of the primates to wander the earth. What was the
purpose of H. habilis’ life? The first function, if you will permit me some latitude in my logic systems, was to
evolve to be a species in the first place. The next function was to stay alive as an individual by providing
oneself food and perhaps some shelter and clothing. Another required function was to reproduce and to do
this required both an instinct for sex and an instinct to care for the offspring. The final act of the species was
to evolve into the next species or to simply die off when a superior species was in competition for their
preferred space.
Thus is the true purpose of life for humans. It is their job to sustain themselves, have children and pass on
the responsibility of evolving to them. What is now confronting humans is that last responsibility. Humans
are now on the threshold of passing on the job of running this planet to inorganic complex adaptive systems
which in this site are referred to simply as robots for the purpose of brevity. Are humans up to recognizing
this task and helping in the orderly transition or are they going to keep their myths and remain in denial of the
future?
For now, human psychological denial is the dominant reaction of humans.
