Nuclear Power Introduction
In 1996, former vice president Al Gore said, "Nuclear power, designed well, regulated properly, cared for
meticulously, has a place in the world's energy supply." Ten years or so later, Patrick Moore, a founder of
Greenpeace; Hugh Montefiore, a former board chairman of Friends of the Earth; James Lovelock, author of The Ages
of Gaia; and Stewart Brand, of Whole Earth Catalogue fame, began to echo the observations of Gore and Weinberg.
Major environmental organizations are also taking a fresh look at nuclear power, and so are leading politicians of
both parties. Several countries, including the United States, are planning construction of more nuclear plants...
