LiveFuels uses Algae to make Fuel

LiveFuels, based in Menlo Park, CA.
Some of our scientists are breeding various strains of algae.
Some are working on driving down the costs of harvesting algae.
Some are working on extracting fats and oils from the algae.
Theoretically, algae can yield 1,000 to 20,000 gallons of oil per acre.

Theoretically, the U.S. could grow enough algae on 20 million acres to replace imported oil.
20 million acres is 28% of the area of Arizona, to give you a sense of proportions.

By comparison, it takes 40% of our corn crop to make 5% of our fuel needs and only yields 1% because
of the fuel it takes to make ethanol.

LiveFuels is working to make this a reality.
