Ozone Depletion By Volcano

Reid Bryson was head of the Institute for Environmental Studies in Madison, Wisconsin.  Back in the
1980s, he told Roger Maduro not to pay any attention to the ozone depletion theory via CFCs because
there was a volcano in Antarctica that pumped more chlorine into the atmosphere than the entire
production of CFCs on Earth.  This information caused Roger Maduro to make phone calls to top
volcanologists in the United States and confirmed what Reid Bryson had stated.  Mt. Erebus on Ross
Island in Antarctica pumps more than 1000 tons of chlorine a day into the atmosphere.  This means that
Mt. Erebus was lofting more chlorine into the atmosphere in one week  than an entire year's production
of CFCs.

To see how much CO2 is emitted by Mt. Erebus each day, go to:
http://erebus.nmt.edu/geochemistry/co2.html
You will notice that 1850 Million grams (tonnes) of CO2 are emitted on average each day.
They also provide a chart showing how much CO2 is emitted by other volcanoes each day.

To see live and recorded video of Mt. Erebus, go to this site:

There are environmental stations on Ross Island where the effects of Mt. Erebus eruptions may be
monitored.
