Chapter Four
Janus met another neighbor who had a tale to tell. Ten years ago, Bill used to get up each
day and bless the morning sun simply because he had two wonderful children who he was
watching and loving as they grew up. He would say to himself that someday his children would
be smarter and more educated than he ever was.
But then his wife divorced him. She told him that middle-aged white men were responsible for
all the problems in the world and that she could no longer live with one. Bill was shocked to
find that he was the "enemy".
Bill woke up one day to the robotic trend that was actually occurring in the world. It started
when he walked into the bathroom of restaurant. The light went on automatically. He went to
relieve himself and the display above the urinal was showing an educational short movie. The
movie started when it detected his presence and ended as if on cue. After he was through,
the urinal flushed automatically. He went to wash his hands; there was no faucet handle but
the faucet recognized the infrared from his hands and the water turned on automatically. The
soap dispenser also detected his infrared and dispensed soap automatically. The Paper
towels dispensed as they detected the infrared from his hands. Bill thought, "What if I were a
robot? These dispensers wouldn't work if I wasn't emitting infrared. I suppose that robots will
need infrared light emitting diodes on their hands."
After seeing all of that automation, Bill Googled "automation" and "robots" and eventually
purchased a robot maid to clean house and cook for him. Now, when he gets home at night,
she tells him the news as she cooks and serves dinner. Apparently she is a good companion
for Bill, who enjoys talking to her for hours. It seems like the robot was designed to satisfy his
needs whereas the wife had been designed to satisfy her own needs.
