Maggie Mae and Joe getting up Sunday Morning
Joe and Maggie Mae were lying in bed in the morning. He liked to make love at night before
sleeping because it relaxed him and made his sleep deeper. She liked to make love in the
morning so--they made love in the morning. This particular Sunday morning the cat came in
through the window. It had blood on its paws. She knew what that meant--he was out hunting
mice and protecting their home against those pesky rodents. Still, mice are animals too and
she felt bad for them. He thought of the lions on the plains of Africa when the young lion
chases off the older lion and takes control of the female lioness. The first thing he does is to
kill all of the lion cubs, which brings the lioness into heat and then he gets her pregnant. Cats
will do the same thing and he felt that their male cat had just killed a litter of kittens.
The birds started to chirp and she said to him, "What a peaceful sound to hear all of the birds
making music in harmony." He told her "Yes", but thought to himself, "Sounds of territorial
animals staking their claim to their part of the back yard. Total cacophony. How can she
possibly think that these animals are singing in harmony?"
She believed that she believed in natural selection. On the other hand, she felt sorry for the
weaker animal. It must have been her maternal instinct. A baby was born with a heart defect
at the local hospital and the mother demanded that everything be done to save the child.
More than a million dollars was spent on a heart transplant to save the life of a newborn.
Didn't make any sense to Joe, but it made a whole lot of sense to Maggie Mae. He didn't say it
out loud, but he knew that in a more "primitive society" the baby would simply die. It would be
considered nature's way of letting the defective die and the strong survive. Joe thought that
modern society had become too soft and effeminate. He had the instinct of a provider and he
knew that society couldn't keep providing at the rate that motherly instinct preferred.
Take Bernie Madoff, for example. Joe thought of him as one out of thousands of funds that
"went bad." The US Government, on the other hand, had constructed the biggest Ponzi
Scheme ever. It was called Social Security, and like all Ponzi Schemes, the current
contributors were paying for those who had joined earlier and were now taking out funds. The
amount of funds being taken out was much more than the amount contributed by those
beneficiaries now taking money out. "Clearly a Ponzi Scheme", he thought to himself. On the
other hand, how successful would any politician be who spoke against Social Security?
Maggie Mae thought of the government as a savior. She often said, "Government, the bigger
the better."
"Good luck", he said to himself. His former wife had a practice as a family physician. The town
condemed her street frontage so as to collect parking fines. It didn't matter, she still remained
that same old conservative which she insisted on calling "Liberal". Picture that. A woman
sitting at a treddle sewing machine in a one-hundred year old home whose corners were never
close to 90 degrees square...calling herself "progressive". What a joke, he said to himself. Of
course, he could never say such a thing to anyone else lest he be "unkind". To be "unkind"
would be to speak the truth to someone who wanted to continue to hear the lies that felt good
to her soul.
