Maggie Mae and Joe Didn't think about the fact that uploading is coming
Alonzo Karas gave a lecture on why he is against mind uploading at Seren's Fullfilment
meeting. Among other things, he came up with the following:
"I can only use one machine as my substrate, cuz I'm an upload. So
therefore my rate of resource utilization is 1/2. So I'm only 50%
efficient at using available resources".
Now, I grasp the second half of this argument. If I use only one computer to run my uploads, its
capacity must be shared among each one. My mind could make use of 100% of its capacity if I
run one upload, 50% if I run two (assuming my copy needs the same amount of computational
resources) 25% with four..and so on.
But, I do not understand why, as an upload, I am limited to 'one machine as my substrate'. I
know of no software that is limited to one computer. The only explanation I can think of, if you
run multiple uploads on their own hardware, each one would be occupying a different place
and is objective from my subjective POV, and therefore it is not me but more like a sibling.
There could be other reasons, though. Can anyone think of another reason why an upload is
restricted to one machine as its substrate?
