Naive Views of Life
There are women who firmly believe that their Gynecologist must be a woman because male
ObGyns don't understand women as well and are not able to "pick up on nuance" as well as
female docs could.
There are also Caucasian women who firmly believe that a doctor of another race or religion
wouldn't understand them as well or be able to "pick up on nuance" as well as Caucasian
female docs could.
They could actually have a point if the ObGyn believed in abortion and the patient didn't or the
doc didn't and the patient did.
Meanwhile there are robotic docs which can see your pulse by having acute vision and looking
at the subtle pulse in your eyes. They can see if your heart starts beating faster when they
ask you if you have been taking your meds on a regular basis. They are also working on robot
sense of smell using new devices made of carbon nanotubes. Picture a robotic doctor being
able to look at your skin and detect the temperature pattern that cancer displays. Dworin
doesn't have an infrared scanner but some dermatologists do and it helps to detect both skin
and other deeper forms of cancer. Remember the story of the cat in the Medical care facility
who would start sleeping on patient's beds the day before they died? If animals have such a
sense, is it because of some mysterious animal instinct or is it something that is related to
smell and animals have a keener sense of smell than humans? What if a robot doctor was
outfitted with a keen sense of smell as well as infrared vision and could sense more factors
than your human doctor could? Progress has many surprises in store for us. Don't simply
conclude that robots will never have an advantage.
Last year 3000 people died due to the driver of a car being involved with communications with
his or her smartphone, iPad, iPod or other computerized device.
In a related story, every new car sold in Europe must have anti-lock brakes fitted as standard.
The new Brussels legislation makes anti-lock mandatory from 1 July, so that even the
cheapest city car must offer the safety device that only a few years ago was the preserve of
luxury cars.
Cars are now available with warning lights which indicate when a car has entered the driver's
"blind spot". How many years will it be before this becomes mandatory?
Another feature is a warning system that sets off an alarm when the driver's eyes drift away
from viewing the road for too long.
It has been proposed that every car be outfitted with a device that mandates that the driver
take a breathalyzer test before they can start their car.
It seems as if we are at a point in time when we don't yet trust a computer to do our driving for
us BUT we also don't trust humans to be sober and to concentrate their attention on the road
sufficiently to avoid thousands of deaths.
Humans are a strange breed of animals. They are semi-intelligent beings who have an ego
that makes them think that they are actually "intelligent".
Consider this simple fact: If 3000 people died each year in airplane crashes in the United
States, the human population would cry out that something be done about it.
Yet, these same supposedly "intelligent beings" barely complain when 3000 people die on the
highway due to humans stupidly distracting themselves with electronic communications
devices.
The solution to this problem will be the same as always. More laws, more electronic controls,
etc.
This pattern will continue until it becomes the law everywhere in the US that humans are not
permitted to drive an automobile except under special circumstances.
Think about it. Do we trust the President of the United States to drive his own car? Certainly
not. He is lucky if he gets to drive a golf cart. What if the Secret Service let him drive a golf cart
and he hit a rut and tipped it over? There would be an outcry.
The more important a person is, the more likely we are to demand that a professional driver
take the wheel.
Of course, there are exceptional human geniuses who drive their cars at high speed around
oval tracks and occasionally kill themselves and others.
Other geniuses like Billy Joel get drunk and drive their expensive sports cars into trees.
The robots are coming and humans will elect to keep them coming.
The reason: Humans need adult supervision.
