In western civilized countries, humans ‘go to the bathroom’ by standing or sitting on
a toilet seat in a bathroom.  These bathrooms may be in a public place or in one’s
home.  When a toilet is flushed, tiny aerosol particles are created and can float all
over the room.  Engineers designed a toilet seat cover which should be placed in
the down position in order to reduce the amount of aerosols present.  In America,
what percentage of humans lower both the seat and seat cover before flushing the
toilet?  Women usually sit on the toilet and men often stand to urinate.  If you were
to find both seat and cover in the up position, you would suspect that not only had
a man last used the toilet but that he was a man who cared little for common
courtesy of sanitary practice of reducing aerosols.  If the bathroom in question also
has toothbrushes hanging on tooth brush racks or sitting exposed in glass holders,
it doesn’t take much imagination to see that the aerosols from flushing with the
cover up can obviously make their way to the toothbrushes.  In fact, scientists have
measured toothbrushes and found that these bacteria actually make their way to
the toothbrushes in significant numbers.

Does this merely build immunity in the humans or is it harmful?  It depends on which
germs are being spread.  Just in case someone has a dangerous germ in one’s
intestines, it is preferred that humans always lower both seats before flushing the
toilet.  What percentage do?  What percentage of physicians do?
