Demand for New Forms of Life

There is a demand for producing copies of books which was once fulfilled by monks carefully copying by
hand.  This demand is now satisfied by a range of devices such as printing presses and computer
printers.

A number of human savants have been able to multiply large numbers in their heads.  The need for this
function is more readily satisfied by using inorganic devices such as calculators and computers.

Some human savants have also been able to memorize huge quantities of information such as phone
books or library books.  More useful is a computer database which is tied to the internet so that access
is more universal.

Kim Peek, a savant who can both multiply large numbers and memorize many books, cannot button his
own shirt.  There is a need for robots who can both button their shirts and perform other useful functions
such as manual labor.

There is little demand for many functions of the human brain such as hunger, sexual desire and desire
to "commune with nature."  We don't yet know whether an intelligent robot will require sleep.
