When will automobiles be able to drive themselves?

We are waiting until the price of robotic driving goes down.  GPS systems exist which can position the
vehicle within two centimeters, when the sky is visible and inertial guidance systems can be used when it
is not.  Visual or radar viewing is also needed in case something is in the road.  Right now the units are
too expensive for production.  By 2010 is the projected date, but regulators could push that date back.

By then, not only will prices come down but visual recognition by robots will have improved greatly.
Although we know that humans cannot be trusted to drive automobiles, we have no choice until the
economic and regulatory forces are ready.
