Natural Errors
Levels of Heavy Metals in Herbs
The levels ranged from 0.18 to 0.86 micrograms of cadmium per gram of herb
or extract. (The proposed limit of cadmium in medicinal plants set by the
World Health Organization is 0.3 mcg per gram of whole herb.) One of these
products was also contaminated with an amount of lead that, although small,
would require a warning label in California.
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is known to accumulate heavy metals
from the environment. Though the levels in the tested products alone don't
pose a health risk, it's an avoidable exposure, Consumerlab.com said.
Dr. Dean Edell said that the amount of lead in people who take St. John's
Wart is 21% higher.
