Multi-Forum Thinking
Part of the problem that humans face is that they would like to say things in one forum that are
not heard in another forum. Politicians used to get away with saying one thing to people in
their county and another thing to people in Washington D.C. With national media cameras
documenting more and more of what a politician says, it is difficult for a politician to say
different things to different fora.
I have had the theory that people have multiple personalities for many years. When I told a
girlfriend (an MD from NJ) about my theory it came out later that she thought that I was stating
that she had DID, a serious mental disorder. Perhaps it was my presentation that was mainly
at fault, but the problem still remains as to how to present various facts to various audiences
without offending, de-motivating or demoralizing anyone.
Here is an example of someone wishing for a restricted forum:
Michael Silberstein Elizabethtown College in Maryland.
“If people freak at evolution, etc.,” Michael Silberstein wrote in an e-mail message, “how much
more will they freak if scientists and philosophers tell them they are nothing more than
sophisticated meat machines."
Another question he asked is whether talking about this in public will fan the culture wars.
The basic premise is that people cannot handle the truth.
