People Who Predict the Singularity

I am constantly faced with the problem “Should I tell people that human domination is about
to come to an end or should I let them live out their life in ignorant bliss?”

I have noticed that the people that I know who have read books that describe the facts about
artificial intelligence tend to be those who are aware that the “robots are coming”.  Those who
have not read about the facts tend to be the ones who are capable of maintaining the illusion
that humans are ‘magically’ smarter than robots and somehow ‘will always be’.  Denial assisted
by ignorance of the facts.  It doesn’t appear to be related to intelligence.  You don’t have to be
smart to know that the robots are coming, you simply have to be knowledgeable.

Facts are that certain logical proofs that no human could solve have now been solved by
robotic minds.  As far as the creativity of the robotic mind, the use of genetic algorithms has
allowed robots to simulate the human mind’s ability to form new ideas.  Those who claim that
robots cannot think of original ideas simply have not read the literature.  Perhaps they assume
that since their PC is ‘pretty dumb’ that all computers must be dumb.  When you watch a video
of a Hanson Robot talking, you realize that the inexpensive processors are simply too slow.
More progress in multiprocessing is needed.  Both the Stanford Robot Operating System (ROS)
and the Microsoft Robotic OS are capable of supporting multiprocessors.

When the Neanderthals were nearing the end of their existence in Europe 28,000 years ago, I
wonder if there was a group of Neanderthals who met and discussed how it appeared
inevitable that the humans would be taking over.  If there was, I doubt that the majority of
Neanderthals saw the human domination coming.

Well, this time it may be different.  Not different in that most humans know that the robots are
coming, but different in that at least minority groups of humans know that the robots are
coming and understand that we are close to seeing the end of human domination over the
earth.  The Singularity Summit is one such group and will be meeting in San Francisco this
year on August 14-15, 2010.  Does anyone want to join me and attend this conference?

Educated awareness or ignorant bliss?  Which is it?
