Can Humans Fly?

Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the question was can humans fly?

When someone asked that question, what did they mean?
Old movies show people jumping off of cliffs with various flapping-wing contraptions or peddling vehicles
with flapping wings along a flat area hoping to take off into flight.

What happened?
1. Human flight was invented by the Wright Brothers.
2. Humans never could fly.  They simply don't have the physique for it.
3. The definition of "human flight" was changed in people's minds and they began to think that "people
could fly".
