Watson Supercomputer from IBM
One approach to Machine Intelligence is to create a machine which can answer questions in a natural
language. One such robot is Watson is a new question-answering system from IBM based on natural
language.
Such a machine represents the next level above search engines. At first it will accept information in
text strings like a keyboard would deliver. Eventually it will take voice input and provide answers in
voice as well.
To test such a system, one might give it the task of playing Jeopardy against a human champion.
Such a system will lead to one which can answer all sorts of questions lessen the time it takes to
find answers to very difficult problems.
Early attempts have simply matched words to words, but the next generation machines like Watson
and Wolfram|Alpha are having to map meaning to meaning and this means that they are approaching
the concept of 'human understanding'.
