Models in the Mind
Baseball is a Thinking Game
Baseball requires a lot of practice so that the player has a good model of his body and the ball
field in his mind. To be a good fielder, he must think about possibilities before the ball is hit.
If the batter bunts, what will I do? If the batter hits a pop infield fly, what will I do? If the batter
hits a fly ball to right field, what will I do given that there is a runner on second base?
If the fielder pictures each of these possibilities before they happen then he is essentially
making a model of these events and his reaction time will be diminished by the fact that the
models pre-exist before the ball is hit.
