General Discussion of SmartPhones and their problems

A SmartPhone is a device which uses both standard cell towers and WiFi as well.  If your
SmartPhone has both frequencies enabled, there will be increased drain on your battery.  If you
don't need WiFi, then you might turn it off to make your battery last longer.

One solution to this is to use WiFi for both voice and data.  The carriers are afraid that this will
lead to them being able to charge for fewer minutes.  With the advent of 'unlimited' calling and
'unlimited' data, this argument doesn't hold any longer.

The offering of unlimited data leads to another problem.  It is found that 3% of the users are
using the majority of the data.

There is a perception that Fixed and Mobile communications are merging.  This is called FMC.

There has been the question as to whether WiFi could be used for phone calls in various
handsets.  The answer is yes and Cisco is going to provide this service for CDW by installing
systems on the CDW sites to separate voice and data that it receives via a WiFi connection to the
iPhones used by company personnel.  Apparently it is not difficult to create an app for the
iPhone to do this.  Question is "will Apple approve such an application"?  Another question is
whether AT&T can support all of that data and voice without offloading as much as possible to
other frequencies such as WiFi?  What is needed is a heirarchy of cells from macro cells to
femto cells.
