Data services traffic keeps growing and growing and operators continue expanding their
networks to handle the growth, but they wake up the next day with the very same problem. Is it
sane to continue to subscribe to and invest in a network model and vendor solutions that were
designed for a yesterday's data services? Well, not really, because there are alternatives – and
one in particular addresses the whole data plane problem in your network core.

One could posit that operators have brought this on themselves. What with flat rate data plans
and wireless Internet access that is nearing fixed line broadband in its experience. But mobile
broadband, while a fledgling service, represents incredible revenue growth potential. An
excellent mobile online experience is immensely valuable to subscribers today and it opens the
doors to entirely new application directions including machine-to-machine and automobiles.
The opportunity is pushing mobile operators to stretch network capacity to grab as many
subscribers as they can - before someone else does - and manage the consequences as they go.
The strategy is further fueling data growth and operators must be quick to adapt their networks
to the new reality. More efficient data traffic management has become a mobile operator
imperative.

Now in a time when every part of the mobile network is being revisited in order to drive
efficiencies up and costs out, there is one vital, underserved area – the mobile data core. In fact,
I have spoken to one large and well known European mobile operating company that has been
asking their suppliers and the industry at large for a solution to reduce the burden of mobile
broadband traffic on their network core for more than a year without satisfaction. When you
consider what motivates the large incumbent equipment suppliers, is anyone really surprised
by this?

Fortunately, with the recently introduced Stoke Mobile Data Offload solution (MDO) operators
can change what they are doing and see very different results indeed. Stoke innovation applies
standard mechanisms to perform intelligent and selective data traffic breakout, dramatically
reducing the traffic load on core network elements to stop endless capacity expansion
requirements. Stoke MDO fully addresses the bottleneck in mobile data core without disruptive
network changes, without new long term infrastructure replacement contracts, and without
breaking the bank. MDO promotes data services growth and profitability.

What about Direct Tunnel you ask? From my perspective Direct Tunnel is a compromise: large
incumbent suppliers have agreed to give up future sales on one core data network element
(SGSN) while practically insisting on wholesale replacement of another (GGSN). At Stoke we say,
why not bypass both altogether and ensure a long life for your current mobile data core
investment! For more on Stoke Mobile Data Offload
